“I just want to show the gaffer what I can do and get in the team so that I can help the club keep winning games. I feel fit and I’m raring to go.”

With Scowen arriving shortly before the squad was due to travel to face Tranmere there was questions over whether he would be ready to feature for the Black Cats, however Parkinson has confirmed that he'll be involved.

Parkinson said: "I am very pleased with the signing of Josh.

"He has got promoted from this level before and has a lot of Championship games under his belt.

The verdict

The signing of Josh Scowen is an excellent move for Sunderland.

The midfielder has a wealth of experience in both League One and the Championship meaning that he'll certainly add to Phil Parkinson's squad.

Scowen has a nickname of 'the rat' which goes a long way to describing what sort of player the Black Cats have picked up, and his tough tackling will no doubt make him popular among supporters.

If he can hit the ground running, he's a player who has the potential to be huge for Sunderland this term.
