Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson is confident that the club can move on Aiden McGeady in the coming days, with the winger surplus to requirements at the Stadium of Light.

McGeady has been with the Black Cats since the summer of 2017, scoring 27 goals during his spell on Wearside.

However, his influence has waned this season and he’s scored just six goals, with his last outing coming on November 26, when he scored in a 2-1 defeat to Burton Albion.

It was reported not long after that McGeady was free to leave Sunderland in the January transfer window, but as yet – 27 days into the window – no club has moved to sign the Irish winger.

Despite that, Parkinson is confident that someone will come in for his unwanted player.

"With Aiden, I just wanted to give him and his agent plenty of time to find a move in the January window,” Parkinson told Sky Sports’ EFL Podcast.

"I think there will be people looking to take Aiden before the window closes, and then he's got to then pick the right challenge that suits him as well."

Since freezing McGeady out, Sunderland have gone eight games unbeaten in League One, which has catapulted them back into promotion contention.

Parkinson’s side drew 0-0 with Doncaster Rovers on Friday night, leaving them only five points adrift of the top-two with a game in hand.

The Verdict

McGeady might be in his 30s now, but he’s still a quality operator and someone who can influence games at League One level and above.

His wages might be a problem, but the fact he’s free to leave Sunderland makes it a surprise that a deal hasn’t been struck for him to leave.

Either way, it sounds like Parkinson is confident of moving McGeady out between now and Friday, so this is a transfer scenario to certainly keep an eye on.
