Sunderland moved up to seventh in the League One table as they narrowly beat Southend United by a goal to nil at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Luke O'Nien's powerful header proved to be the difference between the two sides, in a game where Sunderland dominated the statistics.

One player that impressed during the win was Denver Hume, who provided the inch-perfect cross for O'Nien's goal, and the full-back will be keen to continue his upturn in form as the season progresses.

Speaking in an interview with the club's official website after the win, Phil Parkinson was pleased with the performance from Hume, and claims 'he is getting stronger'.

"It was a great bit of play, a fantastic cross from Denver and what a header. I am pleased with Denver because I think he is getting stronger.

"He is more confident and I think he is getting more dynamic with his play."

"He is positive in his play and I thought in the first 25 minutes of the first half, him and McGeady caused all kinds of problems down that left-hand side.

"I was really pleased with what he’s done since I have been at the club."

Hume has made 12 league appearances for the Black Cats, and is likely to remain in the team for a lengthy spell if Parkinson's recent comments are anything to go by.

Sunderland are next in action on Tuesday when they take on the Leicester Under 21's in the EFL Trophy, where Parkinson is likely to make changes to keep his squad fresh heading towards the festive period.

The Verdict:

I've been really impressed with Hume's performances so far this season.

His cross couldn't have been much better for Sunderland's winner against Southend at the weekend, and he'll be keen to continue to build on his recent showings for the Black Cats.

He's been as good in defence as he has been going forward down the left flank, and Phil Parkinson will be hoping that Hume can remain fit for the remainder of this year's campaign as Sunderland target promotion to the Championship.
