Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson has appeared to open the door to a return to the first-team for Aiden McGeady, with the winger continuing to build up his fitness.

The 34-year-old has fallen out of favour with the Black Cats boss, as he was shipped to Charlton last season, and has been playing for the U23s in the current campaign, although injuries have hindered his game time.

It appeared the two had fallen out, with Parkinson stating earlier this year that he would rather give academy players a chance instead of turning to the experienced Ireland international.

However, with the side looking unconvincing, particularly for inspiration in the final third, there have been growing calls for Parkinson to bring McGeady back into the fold.

And, speaking to the club's official site ahead of the trip to Fleetwood tomorrow, the boss gave an update on the wide man and indicated he will be assessed when he's up to speed.

"Aiden McGeady is essentially on a ‘pre-season’ programme which is what he needs and wants, as he has had a couple of injuries recently. He played an hour for the Under-23s on Monday as we look to get him up to speed.

"I’ve spoken to him; he hasn’t played a senior game since July so it’s important for him to work with this programme, and then we’ll assess him."

The verdict

You can understand why Sunderland fans have been frustrated by all of this. In McGeady, they have a player who is capable of brilliant moments at this level but he hasn't been involved.

In fairness, injuries have played a part but Parkinson wasn't doing himself any favours by shutting the ex-Celtic man out.

These comments suggest he has had a change of heart and it's now down to McGeady to get match fit and force his way into the XI, which he has the ability to do.
