Leeds United winger Mallik Wilks will be departing for either Barnsley or Hull City during this transfer window, according to journalist Phil Hay.

Wilks returned to Elland Road this summer after spending last season on loan at League One Doncaster Rovers, but he is now on the move again as Leeds look to streamline their squad.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a successful spell at Rovers under the tutelage of Grant McCann, with the young talent scoring 16 goals in 55 appearances to help his side reach the play-offs.

It is now possible he could link up with his former boss at his new club Hull, with McCann reportedly lining up a move for Wilks if Jarrod Bowen departs the KCOM Stadium.

Wilks is a graduate of Leeds' academy system, but he made his only appearance for the first team in a FA Cup tie against Sutton United in January 2017.

It now seems he is surplus to requirements under Marcelo Bielsa, as the Argentine seemingly makes room for the new additions he has made to the Whites' squad.

The Verdict

It is surprising to me that Leeds are actively seeking to move Wilks on, given that he enjoyed a prolific season in League One last season.

I thought Wilks would return to Elland Road this summer with a view to breaking in the first team, but it seems Bielsa is very much more focused on recruiting his own players.

I can see Wilks linking up with McCann at Hull, as it is a move that seems to make sense for both parties. I also think Barnsley would be a good move, as Daniel Stendel's high-energy style of play would also suit Wilks.

The winger is ready to make the step up to the Championship after his exploits last season, and it will be interesting to see how he performs when used regularly in the division.
