Leeds United will not be on the lookout for a new centre-back to replace Pontus Jansson, with Marcelo Bielsa confident that summer recruit Ben White will step up.

That's according to reporter Phil Hay, who revealed the latest on the defensive situation on Twitter when responding to a question about any plans Leeds had.

"White will be his other CB. It's a gamble but you know how Bielsa rolls."

Many believed the Whites were short in that department last season, with no real natural cover behind Jansson and skipper Liam Cooper. The likes of Gaetano Berardi, Kalvin Phillips and Luke Ayling would fill in if needed.

However, with the influential Jansson now gone, many Leeds fans wanted to see a more experienced backup, with 21-year-old White yet to prove himself at this level after arriving from Brighton for next season.

Any concerns Leeds supporters had were heightened today as they watched the side emphatically lose to Manchester United in a pre-season friendly.

The Red Devils ran out 4-0 winners against their arch rivals, with Berardi partnering Cooper in the heart of the defence.

The Verdict

This seems needlessly risky from Leeds when you consider that Jansson brought in a decent fee so should be able to be replaced.

White is undoubtedly a talented player but nobody actually knows if he is good enough yet and of course, he or Cooper could pick up injuries throughout the season.

Then, Bielsa is turning to an unnatural player in a key position which does not make sense.

It must infuriate Leeds fans who can see that they are close to having a very good team but a reluctance to strengthen in defence could prevent them from winning promotion.
