Liverpool are hoping to send Rhian Brewster somewhere other than Leeds United in the January transfer window, with the Premier League side hoping that the striker can secure regular game time in the New Year.

Leeds could well be on the lookout for striking reinforcements if Eddie Nketiah is recalled by Arsenal in January, with Brewster someone that The Athletic claim the Whites have an interest in.

However, the article from Phil Hay also states that Liverpool want to send him somewhere with a ‘cast iron promise’ of regular football, which would seem unlikely at Elland Road given Nketiah’s struggle for games.

Nketiah, who has been on the sidelines this month with an abdominal injury, is yet to start in the Championship for Marcelo Bielsa, with his only appearances in the starting XI coming in the League Cup back in August.

Patrick Bamford has led the line in each of Leeds’ opening 18 fixtures in the Championship season, returning six goals.

Nketiah is currently serving as his back-up, and given Bielsa’s faith with Bamford, should Brewster arrive at Elland Road, he would probably be coming in as second fiddle.

So far this season the 19-year-old has made two appearances in the League Cup for Liverpool, as well as featuring for the club’s youth teams and in the England set-up.

The Verdict

Liverpool’s stance is completely understandable, particularly with how Nketiah has struggled for games since arriving at Leeds.

Jurgen Klopp will want the young striker playing games and not just supporting Bamford, which is something that he is likely to get elsewhere in the Championship rather than with promotion-chasing Leeds.

Leeds’ focus will be on retaining Nketiah, with this update indicating that finding a replacement might not be easy.
