The Athletic’s Phil Hay has revealed the explanation behind the extended absence of Leeds United’s January signing Ian Poveda.

The 20-year-old joined Leeds from Manchester City in the winter transfer window, making a permanent switch to Elland Road, but is yet to feature for the Whites.

Poveda has represented Carlos Corberan’s U23s but has not yet made an appearance for the senior side and has rarely been included in Bielsa’s matchday squads.

In a Q&A after the Whites' 1-0 win against Bristol City on Saturday, Hay was pressed on the motivation behind Poveda’s continued absence.

He explained: “Bielsa's explanation on Thursday was that he always wants two defenders, two midfielders and two attackers on the bench. Which implies that Poveda is an odd one out.

"I'm a bit surprised (although nothing surprises you with Bielsa. He really is his own man). I expected him to be in the mix for the rest of this season.”

The 20-year-old has an impressive pedigree, having been involved in the youth setups of some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea and, of course, Manchester City.

Poveda made just one appearance for City’s senior side–a Carabao Cup semi-final against Burton Albion–but was a regular fixtures in their age-group sides, making more than 80 combined appearances.

The Verdict

Poveda’s pedigree makes him a really exciting acquisition for the Whites, so you could understand if supporters of the Yorkshire club are eager to see him in action.

Hay’s claim seems to explain why that hasn’t happened yet and may not happen for some time.

Bielsa seems to prefer a specific balance on his bench and it seems Poveda is a casualty of that.

As the Argentine coach has proven with some of his decisions while at Elland Road, he is a stubborn character, so it appears unlikely he will change his mind soon.

The only way we may see Poveda involved is in the absence of another Leeds player.
