Phil Hay has admitted that he has real doubts whether the Championship season will be able to complete, amid Leeds United’s hopes of securing promotion back to the Premier League.

Leeds sit top of the Championship table after 37 games, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side on the cusp of something special in terms of delivering a Premier League return after 16 long years.

However, the EFL and world football has been brought to a standstill, with a ball not kicked in the Championship since the first weekend of March.

In the eyes of The Athletic’s Leeds reporter, Phil Hay, he’s got doubts about whether the Championship will be able to conclude, plus further doubts over League One and League Two further down the EFL ladder.

It has already been touted that if the season cannot conclude, Leeds and West Brom could win promotion on sporting merit without kicking another ball.

Leeds sit top of the pile, but just a point clear of West Brom in second. The Baggies are six points ahead of third placed Fulham, who lead the chasing-pack in the play-off places.

The Verdict

League One and Two have real problems looking to resume, with the finances behind playing without fans in the ground not worth it to some.

The Championship is different in that it is a lucrative division, with plenty at stake, so you can see why Phil Hay believes the likes of Leeds might be able to get going again.

However, there’s so much doubt around at the minute that it is hard to not agree with his doubts over the Championship’s resume.
