Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has caught the eye of Leeds United, according to The Athletic's Phil Hay.

The 42-year-old represented the Yorkshire club as a player–making almost 250 appearances for the Whites and played a part in some of their best moments in recent years.

Bowyer was a key player during Leeds' run to the semi-finals of the Champions League in the 2000/01 season and it was his long-range effort that Dida fumbled into the back of the net to give the Whites their famous win against AC Milan at Elland Road.

It appears that the club hierarchy may be interested in a reunion in the future as, in a Q&A for The Athletic, Hay suggested that he was a coach on the Whites' radar.

Asked whether Leeds had made a shortlist of coaches in case Bielsa didn't stay on in the summer, Hay said: "It didn't ever get that far. They were on with Bielsa straight away and within about 48 hours of the play-off semi-final, they were sure he'd be staying.

"In terms of coaches they like, Lee Bowyer is someone who's caught their eye (and caught their eye a while ago)."

Leeds' interest is perhaps unsurprising given the fantastic job the 42-year-old has done since taking over at Charlton.

Originally taking charge as caretaker boss after Karl Robinson's exit in March 2018, Bowyer led the Addicks to the League One play-offs in the 2017/18 season.

Charlton lost to in the semi-finals but Bowyer was given the full-time job ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

The 42-year-old steered his side to a third-place finish and promotion via the play-offs last season.

Under Bowyer, the Addicks have made a fantastic start to life back in the Championship and are currently ninth–just one point outside the play-offs.

The Verdict

This is a really interesting revelation from Hay and one that will no doubt get both Leeds and Charlton fans talking.

Whites fans will likely not want to think about the possibility of the Argentine coach leaving the club but you can't help but think he may assess his options if they don't get promoted this season.

From what he has shown at Charlton so far, Bowyer could be an excellent choice as his successor, while he also provides the added bonus of having spent a long time at Elland Road as a player, which is likely to get the fans on board.
