Phil Hay has admitted that he is struggling to see the EFL season completing, with Leeds United sweating on news of the campaign’s resume.

Leeds sit top of the Championship table and nine games away from a return to the Premier League, but Marcelo Bielsa’s men have been stopped in their tracks as public health takes priority.

A ball hasn’t been kicked in the EFL since the opening weekend of March, with a restart plan stalling. The Premier League hope to get going again, but an exclusive from The Athletic yesterday claimed medics of clubs were casting the safety of that into doubt.

On the back of that, Hay took to Twitter to reply to a worried Leeds fan, stating he feels the EFL season will struggle to resume:

Yesterday, EFL chairman Rick Parry stated that he still expects three teams to be promoted to the Premier League and a further three to come down into the Championship, as the game’s governing bodies continue to work towards a safe solution to the season’s conclusion.

Leeds haven’t competed in the Premier League since the 2003/04 season.

The Verdict

On every occasion it feels like we are getting closer to a solution to the season, something crops up and casts it into doubt.

It is tough to see the EFL completing, with so many games to play, but, as Hay states, the Premier League might have a chance if a safe solution can be agreed on.

Once that plan is in place, Leeds might finally learn what their promotion fate will be.
