The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has provided an update on the status of Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich’s contract negotiations.

Starting with talismanic midfielder Kalvin Phillips, Leeds have provided a string of first-team players with new deals during the start of the season.

Phillips and captain Liam Cooper have both signed new five-year deals with the club, while versatile wide-man Stuart Dallas has penned a new four-year contract.

It appears that midfielder Mateusz Klich, whose current contract at the club is set to expire this summer, could be the next man to commit his future to the club.

According to Phil Hay from the Athletic, the Poland international is close to agreeing terms with the club over a new deal.

In a Q&A, he explained: “He's very close to getting it done. It all seems to be in hand. Would expect it to be three years.”

The 29-year-old has been an integral player for the Whites this season, starting in every single Championship game so far and averaging the fifth most key passes per game in the division, according to Whoscored.

With two goals and one assist to his name, Klich has not been able to find quite the same level of production as he did in the 2018/19 campaign–when he scored 10 goals and provided nine assists.

Klich has helped Leeds climb to second in the Championship, just one point behind the league leaders Swansea City.

The Verdict

After the Kemar Roofe situation in the summer, Leeds have done a great job of tying down some of their key players to new contracts in the early part of the season.

It seems Klich is set to be the next person to do so, which is certainly a boost for the club. The Poland international is an important player in Marcelo Bielsa’s side and is understood to have drawn the attention of Premier League sides.

Wrapping the business up early will allow the players to focus on their football for the rest of the season, which could aid the Whites in their promotion push.
