A Leeds United move for Neal Maupay looks unlikely to Phil Hay, despite the fact that the Whites are set to lose last season’s top goalscorer Kemar Roofe in the last week of the transfer window.

Leeds are set to face Bristol City in their opening game of the Championship season without Roofe anyway, but Hay has confirmed this morning that a move to Anderlecht looks on the cards, with £7m heading the Whites’ way.

Of course, that leaves a major void in Leeds’ squad, with a striker needed.

Fans have suggested Maupay as a potential replacement, after he netted 25 goals and registered eight assists last season for Brentford.

Yet, Hay – formerly of the Yorkshire Evening Post – has claimed he can’t see Maupay signing, stating he’d be terrific, but also expensive.

Yesterday it was reported that Brentford and Brighton were in talks over the 22-year-old Frenchman, with West London Sport confirming he’s likely to cost around the £20m mark.

Currently, Patrick Bamford is expected to lead the line for Leeds heading into the new season, despite the fact the 25-year-old is yet to find the back of the net in pre-season.

The Verdict

Whilst Maupay would be a great addition for Leeds this summer, you can’t see him moving to Elland Road.

If Brentford do let him go, it’ll be to the Premier League, and Leeds aren’t likely to match what they offer, despite the £7m coming in.

With Roofe seemingly on the move, it is shaping up into a massive couple of days for Leeds as they look for a replacement.
