Phil Hay is expecting there to be strong interest in Kalvin Phillips this summer following Leeds United failing to win promotion back to the Premier League.

Leeds were in pursuit of automatic promotion over the course of the season, but ultimately fell short over a crushing Easter weekend. From there, Derby County beat Marcelo Bielsa’s side 4-3 on aggregate in the play-offs, ending the Whites’ promotion hopes for another 12 months.

Phillips played a key role for Bielsa, with the 23-year-old making 44 appearances and impressing in a holding midfield role.

And, the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay is expecting strong interest in Phillips over the summer.

The Mail have already linked Norwich and AFC Bournemouth with an interest in Phillips this summer, with his ability to shield the defence and drop into centre-back seen as major attributes.

In addition to Phillips, Hay has mentioned top goalscorer Kemar Roofe, who is now entering the final 12 months of his contract at Elland Road.

The YEP writer claims it is an issue, with Roofe entering the summer on the back of his most prolific season in a Leeds shirt, having scored 15 Championship goals.

The Verdict

Phillips is bound to attract interest this summer, he’s a good age at 23 and has developed so much under Bielsa.

He looks ready for the Premier League and clubs will take a punt on him at around the £15m mark, there’s little doubt about that.

In terms of Roofe, his contract is a big worry for Leeds and some clarity needs to be given over that in the coming weeks.
