Phil Hay has claimed that the number of injuries Leeds United have had to contend with this season will be approaching the 50 mark following Pontus Jansson’s latest setback.

Leeds sit in a strong position in the Championship table with eight games to play, with automatic promotion still possible for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. That’s something that’s even more impressive when you consider the injuries the Whites have had to contend with.

Last month, Rob Price, who works as Leeds’ Head of Medicine and Performance, told the Yorkshire Evening Post that he’s had to deal with 45 injuries so far this season.

And, Phil Hay at the YEP has since delivered another update, claiming that number will now be creeping towards the 50 mark.

Since then Leeds have lost Kemar Roofe to a knee ligament injury, whilst Bielsa will be without Jansson for three weeks after the Swedish international picked up a knee injury in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United.

Jansson was hurt in a challenge with Billy Sharp, but as Leeds had used up all three substitutes the centre-back continued and finished the game.

He will miss Sweden’s fixtures over the international break and is already a major doubt for Leeds’ clash with Millwall on March 30.

The Verdict

This is incredible – Leeds’ squad is thin anyway, and for Bielsa to have them in promotion contention having contended with 50 injuries, he deserves huge, huge credit.

Of course, things might start catching up with the Whites during the run-in, particularly as they are entering in it without Roofe and Jansson.

However, the side have overcome problems all season and many will be backing them to continue to do so.
