Leeds United's new contract offer for Kalvin Phillips remains on the table as the Whites look to secure the future of the influential midfielder.

The 23-year-old was a key player for Marcelo Bielsa last season as Leeds finished third in the Championship and his form caught the eye, with Spurs among a host of top-flight sides believed to be monitoring the player.

Therefore, there is a lot of worry at Elland Road that they may not be able to keep Phillips, however they have tried by offering the academy graduate a new deal.

But, reporter Phil Hay revealed that there hasn't been much progress on that front when responding to a question from a fan who has asked if the offer is still there for Phillips.

"It is although it will need some negotiation."

Phillips may understandably feel he warrants a similar contract to the top earners at the club, whilst he will surely also be aware of what he could get if he did depart to a Premier League side.

The midfielder is expected to be in action tomorrow as Leeds face Manchester United in a pre-season friendly in Australia.

The Verdict

Keeping Phillips at Elland Road this summer has to be a priority for the club and securing him on a long-term deal would be a massive bonus.

He is a vital part of this team and would be very hard to replace, whilst he is also a leader on the pitch.

His performances last season mean he deserves to be one of the best paid players at the club and Phillips is right to demand a deal that reflects that.

Hay's update suggests an agreement is some way off but the club need to show just how much they want to keep the player and sort this as soon as possible.
