Leeds United are seemingly edging closer to completing a deal to sign Jean-Kévin Augustin before the January transfer window closes.

The Athletic's Phil Hay has provided an important update into that transfer pursuit, and has revealed that Augustin and his agent are in Leeds for talks over a potential loan deal.

The striker is also set for a medical at Elland Road, and the report from The Athletic also claims that the striker has already agreed terms with the Yorkshire-based club.

The loan agreement could be made permanent in the summer if Leeds are to match RB Leipzig's valuation of the striker.

Augustin had previously been on loan with French side AS Monaco, but found regular game time hard to come by, which has seen Leeds register their interest in landing his signature.

The 22-year-old has hinted himself that a move to Elland Road is on the cards, having acknowledged a number of Leeds supporters' messages to him on Twitter over the weekend.

Leeds are currently in need of a striker to challenge Patrick Bamford for his starting spot in Marcelo Bielsa's squad, with the former Middlesbrough man struggling for consistency in front of goal.

It comes after Eddie Nketiah was recalled from his loan spell with Leeds by Arsenal earlier into this month's transfer window.

Leeds are currently sat second in the Championship table, and will be hoping that Augustin can be the player to fire them to a long-awaited promotion back into the Premier League.

The Verdict:

This is a promising update.

Augustin clearly wants to move to Elland Road to work under Marcelo Bielsa, and it's a deal that seems to work for both parties involved here.

Leeds desperately need a striker that is going to want to prove themselves out on loan, and challenge Patrick Bamford for their starting spot, which Augustin clearly feels as though he can do.

If he can hit the ground running, then I have no doubt in saying that Leeds will win a long-awaited promotion back into the Premier League this term.
