Leeds United are making progress as they look to tie down influential midfielder Kalvin Phillips to a new deal at Elland Road.
The 23-year-old enjoyed a brilliant individual campaign as the Whites finished third in the Championship last season, with his performances crucial to the attractive style of play that Marcelo Bielsa encourages.
However, a failure to win promotion meant that doubts emerged over Phillips’ future, with Aston Villa among the top-flight clubs linked with the player over the summer.
With under two years left on his deal in Yorkshire, agreeing a new contract with the academy graduate has been a priority in the past few weeks.
And, from The Athletic’s Leeds United Q&A (15/08) with Phil Hay, talks are at an advanced stage and there is increasing confidence from the club’s end that they will keep hold of Phillips.
“They are speaking and my understanding is that they’re getting close. Both sides want to make it happen and I expect that they will.”
Phillips has started all three games for Leeds this season and is sure to be in the XI on Saturday as Bielsa’s men travel to Wigan.
This is fantastic news for Leeds fans and they will be hoping everything can get signed as soon as possible.
The improvement Phillips has made under Bielsa has been remarkable and he is now undoubtedly one of the most important players at Elland Road.
Therefore, Premier League interest was understandable but Leeds are a club on the rise right now and they have a lot of ambition.
Keeping Phillips during the window was a big statement from the Whites and finalising this would be a huge coup.
