Leeds United seem content on not giving up on securing the signature of Che Adams this transfer window and The Athletic's Phil Hay has revealed the latest twist in the saga.

Many United fans will have been forgiven for thinking that the Adams deal isn't going to happen given the way the saga has been dragged out since the beginning of the window.

Last Monday the Yorkshire Evening Post revealed that United were still awaiting a response from the Premier League club and that while the Whites are hopeful of the move, Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl seems content on keeping the 23-year-old at St. Mary's.

Leeds have been linked with a number of strikers this window, with Britt Assombalonga the latest name linked with a move to Elland Road, according to the Daily Mirror.

Earlier today however, Phil Hay revealed that Adams is still United's number one target this window with Southampton still yet to reject Leeds' bid.

Hay revealed to the Ornstein & Chapman podcast that Southampton could make a decision following their game with Crystal Palace on Tuesday night, meaning United could have an answer in the coming days.

The 23-year-old has yet to score for the Saints this term since making the switch from Birmingham City over the summer.

Meanwhile, Andre Gray is also an option that Leeds are interested in, with the forward down the pecking order at Watford.

The Verdict

Leeds seem content on taking this saga as far as they can and given the fact Southampton have yet to reject the bid they seem right in doing so.

It is strange that the Saints still haven't responded to Leeds' bid but if anything this says to me that United can still hold onto some hope that they may let the 23-year-old make the move.

Ralph Hasenhuttl seems to be the factor that is standing in the way of this move, and given the forms of Danny Ings and Shane Long at the moment it is hard to understand why he is so desperate to keep Adams around.

Adams appeared in the last 19 minutes of Southampton's 3-2 defeat to Wolves on Saturday but has only managed two starts in the last 12 games for the Saints.

It seems the Saints are making Leeds wait on this one but should the Whites get what they want, their perseverance could pay off.
