Phil Hay has played down an imminent Leeds United move for Tottenham centre-back Juan Foyth, despite the fact the Whites are potentially in need of a new centre-back.
Leeds currently sit top of the table and there is an expectation that the club will achieve Premier League football next season, whether that’s through playing the remaining games or on sporting merit.
Attention is naturally turning to the transfer window, with Football Insider noting how Leeds are aware of Foyth’s situation with Spurs, with the 22-year-old wanting out at North London.
Yet, despite talk of that transfer, Phil Hay has played down the fact Leeds are looking to swoop for the Argentine.
Marcelo Bielsa runs with a tight squad in terms of the Championship, particularly with his centre-backs.
Liam Cooper and Ben White have been first choice this season, whilst Gaetano Berardi has provided the natural cover for the position.
White is only on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, who appear to have long-term ambitions to bed him into their defence. Additionally, Berardi is out of contract in the coming month.
Quiz: Have these 15 current Leeds United players been capped at international level? – Yes or no?
There’s a lot to go on before Leeds turn their attentions to transfers, which might be why there’s little floating around regarding Foyth at this moment in time.
Leeds need to know what division they are in next season before they start targeting players, but the top and bottom of it is, as Hay states, they will need at least one new centre-back.
Whether that’s Foyth or somebody else, remains to be seen.
