Leeds United's interest in Britt Assombalonga is unlikely to lead to a move.

That's the view of The Athletic's Phil Hay who has been discussing the future of the Middlesbrough frontman.

The Whites are on the lookout for a striker after Arsenal decided to recall Eddie Nketiah at the start of the month.

That has left Patrick Bamford has the only fit senior striker in Marcelo Bielsa's squad - something which has forced the Yorkshire side into action.

According to Phil Hay, Che Adams is regarded as Leeds' top target this month, while the likes of Andre Gray, Dwight Gayle and Billy Sharp have also been linked with a move.

The Mirror then reported that Assombalonga was a surprise new target for Bielsa's side, however according to Hay this seems unlikely.

Hay said: "They did take a look at Assombalonga but I don't think he'll be the one. Options abroad as well."

The verdict

A move for Britt Assombalonga never appeared likely.

The striker is arguably Middlesbrough's most important player and so they would have been reluctant to allow their star man to move on this month.

Leeds seem to be determined to sign a player on loan with a view to a permanent move - a set up that I can't see benefiting Middlesbrough at all.

From Leeds' point of view, the Whites have one eye on a potential move to the Premier League and whether Assombalonga would have been the man to lead the line in the top flight, I'm not sure.

There's bound to be better options out there for Leeds, it's now just a case of finding them.
