Phil Hay delivers definitive verdict on latest Leeds United transfer rumour

Leeds United will not be signing Gary Cahill this summer, according to Phil Hay.

Football Insider reported earlier this week that Leeds have been offered the chance to sign the experienced defender, who is now a free agent following his release from Chelsea last month.

However, Leeds expert and respected journalist Hay has since responded to the speculation, suggesting that Cahill will not be joining the Whites this summer.

Hay delivered the update on Twitter, responding to a Leeds fan who questioned whether there was any truth to the rumour, and admitted that he did not know where the story has come from.

Leeds are likely to be looking to sign another defender this summer, after Pontuss Jansson completed his move to Brentford earlier this week.

The centre-back was one of Leeds’ most consistent performers last season, but has now left the club following a reported fallout with head coach Marcelo Bielsa.

Tyler Denton has come the fourth defender to leave Leeds in just over a week, after he completed his move to Stevenage earlier today.

His move away from Elland Road follows the departures of Aapo Halme to Barnsley and Liam Kitching to Forest Green Rovers.

The Verdict

Even though he’s coming towards the end of his career and he didn’t play that much football for Chelsea last season, Cahill is still a top defender.

He’s got plenty of experience at the highest level and I see no reason why he couldn’t make an impact in the Championship.

I think he’d be a good signing for Leeds on a free transfer and an ideal replacement for Jansson, although they may struggle to afford his wages.

However, despite reports from earlier this week, it doesn’t seem as though this transfer has any chance of happening.

Hay is usually spot on when it comes to this sort of thing and he seems almost certain that Cahill won’t be joining Leeds this summer, so it’s highly unlikely that this will happen.
