Phil Hay has confirmed that Leeds United hold an interest in Wigan Athletic forward Joe Gelhardt, but there are a host of clubs interested in the England under-18 international.

Leeds have earned Category One status in terms of their academy at Elland Road and a strong focus under the ownership of Andrea Radrizzani has been on recruiting for the future.

Gelhardt, 18, fits the mould, with the forward emerging at Wigan this season and making 18 appearances across all competitions. He scored one goal, which came in the 2-2 draw with Hull City.

As speculation surrounds the future of Gelhardt amid Wigan’s administration struggle, it has been confirmed by The Athletic journalist, Phil Hay, that there is an interest from Elland Road.

However, Leicester City are amongst the Premier League sides interested, but further reports from The Athletic talk of Wigan stalling the departure of Gelhardt. Regardless, the Foxes are the favourites for the deal.

For Leeds, their focus will not be on transfers at this moment in time, with promotion on the line for Marcelo Bielsa.

Today, they travel to Swansea City for a hugely important fixture. A win will see Leeds move three points clear at the top of the Championship table.

The Verdict

Gelhardt is a top, top talent and the race to sign him tells you just how valued he is.

For Leeds, he’d be a great signing, whether they are planning for Championship or Premier League football.

He’s still raw and perhaps not a player that will influence Leeds’ first-team for a couple of seasons, but long-term, it could be a superb piece of business.
