Recent claims surrounding Leeds United loanee Jean-Kevin Augustin earning £90k-a-week+ at parent club RB Leipzig have been backed up by Phil Hay.

Leeds took Augustin on loan from Leipzig during the January transfer window, with the view of the 22-year-old replacing Eddie Nketiah in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.

Yet, Augustin has managed only three substitute appearances for Leeds so far, with a hamstring injury hampering him significantly; he’s now back in training and prepared to make an impact if, or when, the season can resume.

Augustin’s wages have become a talking point recently, with the BT Sport’s Football Writer’s Podcast discussing the Frenchman. There, they claim Leeds are committed to a £20m deal to sign Augustin in the summer if they win promotion, with his wage of £93k-a-week also to be paid.

Those claims have been put the way of The Athletic journalist Phil Hay, who has been able to back up the claim surrounding Augustin’s wage:

In terms of Leeds signing Augustin on a permanent deal, the club confirmed it when he arrived on loan that they do hold an option to make the deal a permanent one at the conclusion of the 2019/20 season.

The Verdict

The numbers behind Augustin really are eye-watering, with many Leeds fans sure to wince at this when you consider his lack of impact so far.

We know he’s got talent, but we are yet to see it in the Championship, which does make any permanent deal a risk, even without these huge numbers.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Augustin’s career pans out beyond this season.
