Peterborough have opted to bring in ex-Mansfield Town manager Steve Evans after sacking Grant McCann.

The sacking of McCann could be seen as harsh because a bad run of form had seen them slip out of the play-off spots, but they were only six points adrift with a game in hand. However, the club clearly has high expectations and Evans is the right man to fill them.

Evans has a history of getting clubs promoted with Stamford, Boston United and Crawley Town all being on his CV. His most recent success being back-to-back promotions with Rotherham United which saw them rise from League Two to the Championship.

Peterborough's main target will be the play-offs and he had success in that specific area because his second promotion with Rotherham was through the League One play-offs.

He leaves Mansfield Town in a good position as well because they current reside in fifth place in League Two, which is impressive considering he didn't have a full season at the club.

His time with the Stags saw him turn Field Mill into a fortress because they had a sole loss in 17 games, and this was key in maintaining their promotion push. The same is likely to happen to London Road especially with the next home match being against fellow promotion chasers Charlton.

Aside from that, they have four easy home fixtures with three being against teams fighting relegation, so they will all be seen as must-wins by Evans. His first match in charge will have to wait, though, as their game with Shrewsbury has been called off.

Evans' chief focus will be on the defence because they have conceded more than any team above them in the table while goals haven't been an issue for the team. He left Mansfield with the third best defence in the league and they roughly averaged a goal conceded per game, so it's well within his ability to improve them in this regard.
