Peterborough United will sign former striker Lee Tomlin on a six-month loan from Cardiff City when the January transfer window opens, report the Peterborough Telegraph

Tomlin has trained with the Posh for the last few days, having fallen well down the pecking order under Neil Warnock, spending the second half of last season on loan with Nottingham Forest.

“What a Christmas present for us all," manager Steve Evans told the Peterborough Telegraph.

"Lee was a great player for Peterborough United and he went to play well for other clubs at Championship level.

"We will need to work on his match fitness, but he looked in great shape physically today and some of the things he did in training suggests he will be a great signing for us."

The 29-year-old scored 43 goals in 156 appearances during his first spell at London Road, helping them to win promotion to the Championship in 2011.

He made the move to Middlesbrough at the end of the 2013/14 season, scoring 14 goals in 64 appearances.

Peterborough currently sit fourth in the League One table with 22 matches played, below Luton Town, Sunderland and Portsmouth.

The verdict

What an unbelievable coup this is for the Posh.

Tomlin has his drawbacks. His temperament has caused him some issues with managers in the past but there is no doubting his ability at all.

If he can regain the form shown at the likes of Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest last season then there is no doubt he will be one of the brightest talents in League One.
