Peterborough United are close to signing Conor O'Malley, according to reports coming out of Ireland.

Conor O'Malley could complete his move from St Patrick's Athletic to Peterborough United soon, The Irish Independent is reporting.

Previous reports have suggested that Leeds United were interested in pursuing this move.

The Irish Mirror reported last week that Leeds United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United and a number of Irish clubs were all interested in poaching the young goalkeeper from St Patrick's Athletic.

O'Malley has been in fine form for St Patrick's Athletic all season, helping them bravely battle against relegation.

However, the 23-year-old now looks set to leave with a number of clubs pursuing his signature.

A move to England is thought to be more appealing for the promising young stopper and now it seems like Peterborough United are set to beat a number of clubs to land him.

Peterborough United made a promising start to the new season with a 2-1 home win over Plymouth Argyle.

Jonathan Bond impressed between the sticks on his debut after joining Posh on loan from Reading earlier in the transfer window.

Former Birmingham man Josh Tibbetts is the other goalkeeper at the ABAX Stadium.

However, it now seems likely that a third 'keeper will be brought in as Irish reports believe that Conor O'Malley is set to leave St Patrick's Athletic in the lurch by jumping ship and joining Peterborough.

The Verdict

Peterborough United have done very well to beat off Championship competition if this deal is finalised.

In Conor O'Malley, they have a highly rated young goalkeeper who already has experience of playing regular football.

O'Malley is thought of as one for the future Republic of Ireland squad.
