Sky Bet League One side Peterborough United are in pole position to sign Newport County defender Dan Butler, according to reports from Football Insider.
Posh manager Darren Ferguson has waited no time in bolstering his squad ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, having already completed the signings of Mark Beevers and Serhat Tasdemir from Bolton Wanderers and AFC Fylde respectively.
And reports claim that the Cambridgeshire side could be set to finalise their third signing of the summer, in the form of left-back Dan Butler from Newport.
The 24-year-old has been an ever-present for Michael Flynn’s side this season, making 60 appearances in all competitions in a season where the Welsh club missed out on promotion to League One via the play-offs.
Newport were defeated by Tranmere in the League Two play-off final on Saturday, as Connor Jennings struck in the last minute of extra time.
Butler has made over 150 appearances for the Exiles since his move from Torquay in 2016, but is now facing an uncertain future at Rodney Parade with his contract set to expire.
After missing out on promotion, Newport will find it difficult to keep hold of their star defender, along with their other key players this summer.
This would be an excellent bit of business by Peterborough if they were to sign Butler on a free transfer.
He has established himself as one of the best left backs in League Two, and definitely deserves the chance to make the step up to League One.
It’s an area that Posh need to strengthen, and he would be a very welcomed addition at London Road.
