Peterborough United are interested in signing Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady this summer, according to The Sun on Sunday (16/05, page 59).
Peterborough are preparing for life back in the Championship after sealing automatic promotion this season, and Sunderland will look to join them in winning promotion, albeit via the lottery of the play-offs.
If they don’t go up, then Lee Johnson will be keen to reshape his squad and make his mark on things on Wearside ahead of another season in League One.
McGeady has been influential for Sunderland this season, scoring four goals in 29 League One appearances and registering 14 assists.
The 35-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season, so could be available for Posh to go out and sign on a free transfer this summer.
Posh are said to be on the lookout for experienced Championship players this summer to help them cement their place in the division next season.
It would be interesting to see where McGeady fits in at Peterborough.
They already have some really exciting young players, especially across the attacking line in Siriki Dembele, Sammie Szmodics and Jonson Clarke-Harris.
McGeady’s experience could compliment them really well, though, and at 35, he is still a cut above the rest in League One this season.
On maybe a one-year deal, it could turn out to be an influential signing for Peterborough as they prepare to embark on life back in the Championship.
Sunderland won’t want to lose him, but they will also eye up younger options as they look to finally escape League One.
