Peterborough United are closing in on the capture of a midfielder, as reported by Peterborough Today.

They've already made some impressive summer moves, bringing in Mo Eisa from Bristol City as well as highly-rated defender Frankie Kent from Colchester United.

Despite throwing Mark O'Hara a first-team lifeline this week, they're still in the hunt for additional strength in the centre of the park.

They're going to be unable to add Ollie Norburn to their ranks - it's reported they were unsuccessful with a bid for the Shrewsbury midfielder with Salop wanting £500,000 for his services.

Darren Ferguson has also ruled out any potential move for Southend's impressive youngster Dru Yearwood. He's been the subject of an unsuccessful bid by Rotherham United and many sides look to be priced out of that chase.

That means Posh will have to turn elsewhere for their current targets. It's reported they're going to attempt to bring two central midfielders into the club.

Although at the moment the club are on a training camp over in La Manga, it's believed they're close to adding to their ranks. They're set to face Scottish side St Mirren in a hastily-arranged friendly after new Nottingham Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi cancelled their planned fixture.

The Verdict

Peterborough have shown serious intent in the market so far this summer. Eisa didn't have a great season at Bristol City, but he's hot property nonetheless.

They also lodged a bid for Sammie Szmodics when they brought in Kent, underlining the intention to add a quality central midfielder.

They'll have a bid of cash to spend, but Darragh MacAnthony and his recruitment team are canny. This summer, they won't be buying for the sake of it. They're much more measured in their approach to player recruitment than last season, perhaps a reflection on then-boss Steve Evans as much as the club.

There are lots of good central midfielders out there, especially in League Two. If a decent bid was made for someone at an aspiring top seven club in that division, it could fund a real promotion push.

That leaves Peterborough with lots of leverage as a club with cash to spend, rather than one hunting free agents.
