Peter Odemwingie reveals truth behind botched Queens Park Rangers move

Peter Odemwingie has revealed that Junior Hoilett’s failure to agree to a move to West Bromwich Albion was the main reason why he didn’t join Queens Park Rangers in 2013.

The forward, who retired from football in 2017, was infamously interviewed outside of the Hoops’ training ground on transfer deadline day after driving down to London in the hope of securing a switch.

However, the Baggies couldn’t reach an agreement with QPR which resulted in Odemwingie publicly criticising the West Midlands-based outfit.

Due to his outburst, the forward was fined two weeks’ wages by West Brom (via Planetfootball) and had to bide his time before eventually being brought back into the starting eleven by then-boss Steve Clarke.

Speaking to Planetfootball about his failed move, Odemwingie said: “If all parties that took part in that whole situation would have said exactly what happened then everyone would have understood.

“But nobody spoke about it because it wasn’t in their interests to do so.

“I took the hit myself.

“I was that close that they prepared a shirt with my name on.

“From what I knew, we had agreed everything.

“They were working on bringing Junior Hoilett to West Brom and apparently him changing his mind at the last minute is what killed the deal.

“I wasn’t aware of that, otherwise I wouldn’t have gone anywhere.”

Odemwingie was eventually sold to Cardiff City by the Baggies and went onto have spells with Stoke City, Bristol City and Rotherham United before leaving England to join Indonesian side Madura United.

During his time with the Sapeh Kerab Warriors, the Nigerian helped the club secure a sixth place finish in Liga 1 by scoring 15 goals in 22 appearances.

The Verdict

When you consider that Odemwingie was arguably playing the best football of his career at the time of this proposed switch, it was hardly surprising when QPR approached West Brom.

Yet after seeing the deal collapse on deadline day, the Hoops ended up being relegated to the Championship whilst the forward experienced a considerable drop-off in form.

If the R’s had been able to complete a switch, history may have played out differently that season.
