The current crop of Leeds United players have their chance to write their own piece of the club's history this season should they win promotion to the Premier League.

United came agonisingly close to a return to the top flight after a 15-year exile but stumbled when it mattered the most, eventually losing out in the play-offs to Derby County.

The club have been through various highs and lows during their 100-year history having been crowned Champions of England on three occasions as well as lifting the FA and League Cups, enjoying their most successful period from the late 1960s through to the mid-1970s.

Although United showed promising signs at the turn of the Millennium, reaching the Champions League semi-final and finishing third in the Premier League, Leeds have spent the majority of the 21st century outside of the Premier League since relegation from the division in 2004.

Clashes with the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have been few and far between for Leeds over the last 16 years but some supporters do still reminisce over the glory days.

On Tuesday the club's official Twitter account showed highlights of Leeds' 5-1 victory over Manchester United back in 1972, which happened on this day 48 years ago.

In the clip, United's side containing legends such as Billy Bremner, Peter Lorimer, and Eddie Gray under the watchful eye of iconic manager Don Revie, easily dismantled Manchester United.

Some fans are longing for these scenes to return to Elland Road, and this particular 'On this day' tweet got a lot of supporters talking.
