Stoke City are preparing a January bid for Rangers winger Jordan Jones, according to a report by the Daily Mail, with the Northern Ireland midfielder having previously played under Potters boss Michael O’Neill for the Northern Ireland national team.

Jones has struggled for game-time under Steven Gerrard at Rangers in the SPFL after signing from Kilmarnock in the summer, and so a switch to the bet365 Stadium to work under his former boss could be tempting for the 25-year-old.

So would Jones be a good signing by the Potters and is he actually needed?

Kris Smith

“I’m not convinced that he would have the quality to displace the players currently operating out wide for Stoke, but he could come in to add some depth to their side ahead of a battle for safety in the coming months.

“Jones has been bit-part under Steven Gerrard in the league, making just four appearances and being sent off in one of those, so there has to be a huge element of doubt over whether he is capable of helping Stoke enough to lift them away from relegation.

“It’s no surprise to see him strongly linked, given that he regularly features for Michael O’Niell’s Northern Ireland side as they look to qualify for the European Championships, so maybe there is an idea there that he will be hoping to capture his international form for the Potters.

“Stoke do need more width and Jones will certainly be eager to link up with his international manager so the move has the characteristics of one that could work out, but I’m not sure whether he does have the quality to make a consistent impact.”

"Stoke are certainly in need of adding to their wide options, with the Potters only really having Tom Ince, James McClean and Thibaud Verlinden to call upon as natural options on the wing, though Tyrese Campbell has been used on the right-hand side recently.

"Michael O'Neill knows all about the qualities that Jones possess with the winger having been selected by the Northern Irishman for the Northern Ireland national team on multiple occasions.

"That suggests that O'Neill will be aware of the different sort of abilities Jones could bring to Stoke's attack, and given the improvement that has been made since he took charge he has earned the backing to secure his main targets.

"Jones would likely be highly motivated to come in and make a real impression, given he has at times struggled to force his way into Rangers' starting line-up, so a move away could be ideal for him to get regular game time."

Phil Spencer

“There’s no doubting that Jordan Jones is a quality player.

“The midfielder is highly rated by Steven Gerrard at Rangers but has found first team opportunities a little hard to come by since returning from injury.

“Jones wants to play regular first team football and Stoke City could be the ideal place to do it.

“The Potters have struggled so far this term and could use a bit more of a spark in order to move themselves up the table.

“Jones certainly does that and will be a massive plus for Michael O’Neill’s side.

“Add to that their previous relationship for Northern Ireland and you have a manager who knows how to get the best out of him

“It’s a move that makes perfect sense for all parties involved.”
