Birmingham City's frustrating start to the 2019/20 Championship season continued in midweek, with Pep Clotet's side losing 1-0 at the DW Stadium to Wigan Athletic.

It has been a stuttering start to the campaign for Blues, who have now succumbed to three defeats on the spin after their defeat in Lancashire on Tuesday night.

After coming back from 2-0 down, only to miss a penalty and lose 3-2 to Derby County at the weekend, Clotet would have been urging his side to bounce back with a much better performance against the Latics.

But after a below-par display, Paul Cook's men condemned Blues to their fifth defeat of the campaign - a Lee Camp blunder allowing Anthony Pilkington to snatch all three points for Wigan in the 76th minute.

Birmingham now sit 14th in the Sky Bet Championship table after 10 league outings, a position that fans would have probably expected before the start of the season.

It was also going to be a tough ask for Clotet to transform Blues' fortunes following the controversial departure of Garry Monk in the summer, especially after losing the likes of Jota and Che Adams to Premier League sides Aston Villa and Southampton respectively.

They did make a big statement of intent in the summer, though, signing Croatian starlet Ivan Sunjic from Dinamo Zagreb, for a reported fee of £6.3m.

Whilst Blues have struggled to get properly going thus far, Sunjic hasn't failed to disappoint since making the move to St. Andrew's - the 22-year-old has been an ever-present in the Championship thus far.

On Saturday afternoon, Sunjic scored his first goal in English football for Blues, getting Clotet's side back on level terms in unlikely circumstances, before going on to throw the game away.

Although he may have been unable to prevent his side from falling to a disappointing defeat, he still remained confident on the ball, constantly trying to make things tick for Blues.

After the game, Clotet insisted there is more to come from the club's big-money summer signing, which is likely to be music to Birmingham fans' ears.

Via the Birmingham Mail, he said: "Obviously he will have very good games and he will have bad games like everyone because we all have bad days - but at the end of the day what is your median performance?

"I think Ivan has put in very good median performances and there is absolutely more to come."

The results haven't quite been there for Birmingham at times this season, and every player could and probably should have performed better, Sunjic included.

But the dynamic midfielder's performance levels haven't dropped, and for Clotet to say that there is still more to come from the Croatian is surely exciting news.

He is clearly a player with real pedigree, typified by playing for Zagreb in the Champions League before his move to St. Andrew's, and if they can play to his strengths, then results will soon pick up for the West Midlands side.
