Birmingham City boss Pep Clotet insists that he will attempt to shake hands with Garry Monk this weekend when the ex-Blues chief brings his Sheffield Wednesday team to St. Andrew's.

The Spaniard had been Monk's number two over the years but the duo fell out in the summer when Clotet was named as his successor at Birmingham.

The Owls manager made his feelings clear in the build up to the previous meeting between the sides in November and he refused Clotet's offer of a handshake in the build up.

However, speaking to Birmingham Live, Clotet made it clear that he will treat Monk the same as he would any manager and vowed to behave professionally.

"Yes, I will act normally like any other game. For me I am representing Birmingham City and I will do it with dignity, with respect to whoever.

"After 20 years in this business I am not up for things anymore. It’s about manners, respect the club with dignity, act accordingly, it’s more important than anything else in my opinion."

The game finished 1-1 when the teams met at Hillsborough and they go into this fixture on the same points.

The verdict

Clotet will have known that he would face questions about Monk in the build up to this but he has come across very well with his answers here.

Clearly, the two have had a major fallout but he won't let that distract from the job ahead and he doesn't want the focus to be on the dugouts this weekend.

Of course, Monk may feel differently and another snub from the Wednesday chief would make this newsworthy again, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
