Birmingham City caretaker head coach Pep Clotet has revealed that the club have already identified potential targets for the upcoming January transfer window.

The Spaniard, who was handed over reins at St Andrew's in June following Garry Monk's departure, has experienced a relatively encouraging start to life in charge of the Blues.

Following an impressive victory on the opening day of the season, Birmingham picked up 10 points from their next nine games in the Championship.

Since beating Middlesbrough last month, the Blues have struggled somewhat for consistency as they have won two and lost three of their last five league fixtures.

Whilst the likes of Ivan Sunjic and Fran Villalba have been able to deliver the goods for Birmingham following their summer moves to the club, the same cannot be said about Jake Clarke-Salter or Alvaro Gimenez.

Given that the Blues are currently 13th in the Championship standings, they could potentially reach new heights if they add to their squad in January.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail about his side's recruitment plans, Clotet said: "The club is preparing for any position in case something happens.

"We have a wide squad at the minute so we need to be selective with what we want to bring.

"I know the club is working very hard and they have already got our targets selected.

"That for me is a pleasure to see in a club.

"The club is as committed as well as much as possible to be able to recruit as early as possible in January."

The Verdict

If Birmingham are to launch a sustained push for a top-six finish next May, it could be argued that they need to bolster their squad during the upcoming transfer window.

Therefore, Clotet's comments about potential recruitment ought to be music to the ears of the club's supporters who have already been treated to some memorable moments this season.

Providing that the Blues can keep some of their star performers at St Andrew's in January, there is no reason why they cannot go onto achieve a relative amount of success under the guidance of Clotet.
