Birmingham City boss Pep Clotet has revealed that Jefferson Montero is in contention to feature against Leeds United this weekend after a quicker recovery than expected from a thigh injury.

The rapid winger joined Blues on deadline day in the summer and made his debut as a late sub in the win against Barnsley back in August.

He was then handed his first start against Stoke eleven days later but it was a day to forget for the Ecuador international as he was forced off after just 29 minutes.

Montero was initially ruled out for 'several weeks' and Clotet told the club's media this afternoon that he has been involved with the group over the international break ahead of the trip to Elland Road.

"He has got over his injury and has had two weeks of training, he is working hard, he has come back sooner than we expected and that credit has to go to our medical department for their hard work."

It seems unlikely that the former Swansea man will be in from the off on Saturday after Blues produced their best performance of the season to date against Middlesbrough last time out.

The verdict

This is very good news for Birmingham as everyone has seen over the years what Montero can offer when he is fit and he is a real threat with his speed and dribbling ability.

So, it's obviously a big boost to have him back but he will have to be patient as Clotet has a few good options out wide right now who deserve to be ahead of the recent recruit.

But, this is the position every boss wants to be in with good competition for places and it's now down to the players to impress when they are given a chance.
