Birmingham City boss Pep Clotet insists that he is preparing for a very tough game when his side take on a struggling Sheffield Wednesday outfit this weekend.

The fixture, which sees Garry Monk return to St. Andrew's to face his former assistant, comes at a time with the two sides in hugely contrasting form.

Blues are on a ten-game unbeaten run in all competitions, whereas the Owls haven't won in in six Championship games and they were beaten heavily at home to Reading last time out.

Nevertheless, Clotet told the club's media that he is ready for a tough test against the Yorkshire side.

"We are going into the game on Saturday to secure three points, we know it will be difficult, they have experience of the play-offs, they were tipped to be promoted, they have both the quality and the talent, the fact they are in a bad moment means nothing.

"We are focused and ready, but we know it will be a tough match."

Another victory could see Blues close the nine-point gap to the play-off places.

The verdict

This is a very sensible message from Clotet as we all know how unpredictable the Championship is, so you shouldn't really read into what has gone on over the past few weeks.

However, Wednesday's poor run means they will be nervous and Blues need to do all they can to get off to a fast start on their own patch.

Ultimately though, it's going to be a close game and everyone connected to Birmingham would love to continue their fine form by getting one over their former boss.
