Birmingham City boss Pep Clotet has revealed that Cheick Keita has been impressing him in training as the left-sided player looks to force his way into the first-team.
The 23-year-old has spent the past two seasons out on loan, meaning he last pulled on a Blues shirt in a competitive game back in the summer of 2017.
Therefore, a summer exit seemed somewhat inevitable but Keita has remained at St. Andrew’s and after returning to full fitness he has been back working with the group.
And, Clotet revealed when speaking to Birmingham Live that he has been pleased with what the former Virtus Entella has shown on a day-to-day basis.
“You can read into that he has been training really, really well in the last few weeks/month, he has been impressing me. I hope if he continues like that he will be challenging to get into the team.
“He really wants it, he is proving that. He hasn’t talked the talk, he has walked the walk.”
Even though he is capable of playing left-back, Clotet sees Keita as a winger in his future plans.
This is encouraging news for Keita as he will be desperate to get back out playing for Blues and this suggests that he is doing the right things in training.
Of course, it’s hard to judge him as he hasn’t played in this country for over two years but with his pace and direct style he has qualities that Blues lack right now.
So, it’s down to the player to keep up the good work in training and be ready to take any opportunity that comes his way in the next few months.
