Former Portsmouth man Pedro Mendes has stated that Nwankwo Kanu was the best player played with whilst at Fratton Park.

The Portuguese midfielder spent two-and-a-half years on the south coast and was hugely influential during that time, starring as Pompey stayed in the Premier League against all odds and he played his part as they memorably lifted the FA Cup.

Therefore, Mendes is very popular with the fans and the club got him to do a Q&A with fans on Twitter this afternoon. And, one question put to the 41-year-old was asking the best player he played with for Portsmouth, with Mendes picking Kanu.

"I had the luck to play alongside some very, very good players but I have to choose Kanu. Kanu was incredible, his technique was amazing."

The Nigerian enjoyed a fantastic career, featuring for the likes of Ajax and Arsenal but he finished his playing days with Pompey and will always be remembered for scoring the winner against Cardiff City to ensure Harry Redknapp's side lifted the FA Cup.

The verdict

Kanu was a unique player and was a joy to watch throughout his career because of his skill and talent on the ball.

Even though he was probably past his very best when he arrived at Portsmouth, he still had a lot to offer and he clearly left a positive impression on Mendes.

Of course, that goal at Wembley means he will always be loved by the fans too, so there won't be many complaints about this choice!
