Middlesbrough moved closer to the relegation zone after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Leeds United.

The Teessiders started well at the Riverside Stadium but allowed Marcelo Bielsa's side to grow into the match as they dominated the majority of the first half.

Mateusz Klich dealt the hosts a half-time sucker-punch with a fine finish before the break which gave Jonathan Woodgate plenty to ponder at the break.

Both sides had opportunities in the second period but in truth it was only ever the Whites who looked like coming away with the three points.

Here's how we rated Jonathan Woodgate's side.

Aynsley Pears - 8

Made a couple of excellent saves to deny the visitors. A really good display after a difficult few weeks.

Jonny Howson - 7

One of Middlesbrough's best on the right. Occasionally gave Jack Harrison too much space but tracked back well and played out from the back.

Ryan Shotton - 7

Made some wonderful tackles to keep Leeds out in the areas. Middlesbrough's top performer on the night.

Harold Moukoudi - 6

Had a decent game at the back. Relatively solid and played on from the back well.

George Friend - 5

Struggled against the direct play of Leeds United. Replaced on the hour.

Lewis Wing - 6

Not his best performance in the middle of the park as he gave the ball away under pressure.

Adam Clayton - 5

Played himself into trouble on occasion but did well to keep the Leeds midfielder locked down for long spells.

George Saville - 5

Had a tough night against Pablo Hernandez but did well despite picking up a silly first half booking.

Marcus Tavernier - 7

Showed some neat touches but occasionally tried to do too much. An encouraging display.

Hayden Coulson - 7

Caused some real problems for Luke Ayling down the flank as his pace and direct running saw him get in behind on occasions. Just lacked the quality in his final ball.

Ashley Fletcher - 5

Marked out of the game by Leeds United's defenders. Far too isolated.

Can you identify these Middlesbrough players based on their date of birth and birthplace? Have a go!

Substitutes

Marvin Johnson - 7

Made a positive impact after his introduction as he looked to run at the Leeds defence. Tracked back well and offered more in his cameo than some did over 90 minutes.

Lukas Nmecha - 5

Put himself about the final third but was never really able to impact things.

Britt Assombalonga - 5

Gave the ball away and looked generally disinterested.
