Their 2-1 win at the New York Stadium may have dealt his Rotherham United side's own Championship survival hopes a blow, but Paul Warne says he still hopes Norwich City will gain promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season.

A boyhood Norwich City fan, Warne is hoping to have a double to celebrate when the curtain comes down on the Championship season: promotion for Norwich and survival for his Millers side.

The fight for the top two in the Championship is still incredibly open with Leeds, Norwich and Sheffield United the trio really at the forefront of the automatic promotion mix.

Speaking to the Eastern Daily Press, Warne said: “I would like to see them go up. I couldn’t say that before the game.

“One of my mates texted me and said, ‘Knowing what you are like with Norwich if you went 1-0 you would take your keeper off’ which is not true. Now it’s finished I wish them all the best."

After Kenny McLean put Norwich ahead on the stroke of half time on Saturday, the in form Semi Ajayi equalised early in the second half to give Warne's side hope, only for that to be extinguished by Ben Godfrey's winner five minutes later, though Warne claims that many of his team's opponents were complimentary of his side, revealing: "I shook hands with all the Norwich players and 75pc of them told me we deserved more out of the game and I told the lads that."

Giving his thoughts on whether or not Norwich's promotion campaign would be successful, the Millers boss added: “Will they ever get a better chance? I don’t know.

“They are injury free, they play the same XI virtually every week and they have quality on the bench desperate to get in. The points they are picking up away from home is unbelievable.

“They caused us problems Sheffield United didn’t (the previous week) but in fairness that was a 10-man game and they probably took their foot off the gas.”

The verdict

They may still be in the relegation zone, but Rotherham have shown they are not going down without a fight this season, and will surely be in there until the very end.

At the other end of the table, Norwich are in a strong position after the weekend's results and show no signs of stopping grinding out results. Warne's hopes of a double celebration could well come true.
