Derby County host Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon in one of the more high profile encounters in the League One calendar.

The match will see Paul Warne come across players that he managed at Rotherham United in Will Vaulks, Michael Ihiekwe and Michael Smith.

The latter two were part of Warne's second-placed finish in League One with the Millers last season, and the former fitness coach was still in charge in Yorkshire when the duo opted to drop back down to the third tier to join Sheffield Wednesday in the summer.

Warne is not the type to hold grudges and will likely understand the reasons why the duo left for Hillsborough in the summer, but the added context does add some spice to this afternoon's occasion.

Warne explained what it was like dealing with their departures and dropped a bold comparison to the situation when he spoke to The Yorkshire Post.

He said: "It was disappointing when they (Smith and Ihiekwe) left in the summer as I knew what good players they were.

"When the ones who don't contribute to your success leave, there's no drama.

"When the main ones do, it’s a drama; that's what it felt like.

"That week was tough for the club as they were really good players.

"It'd be the same if De Bruyne and Foden left Man City in a week, it would be a big deal.

"I texted 'Smudge' (Smith) this week as I saw he came off the bench and scored two goals.

"He texted back with a 'laughing face' saying that he remembered that conversation we had in my office when we both agreed that he was one of the worst subs in history! That made him laugh and I remember having that conversation. He's come on and scored two, so it shows what I know…

"He's doing well.

"I have seen a couple of Sheffield Wednesday games and against Bristol Rovers, he scored a header just before half-time.

"Iky (Ihiekwe) is doing well as well and as a team, they are a formidable outfit and have recruited really well."

This will be a very interesting test for the Rams, against a side who are competing in their desired region of the table, and even though Warne is being very professional about facing his former players, the competitive side of him would be delighted to get one over them.

The Verdict

Sheffield Wednesday have the opportunity to climb into the automatic promotion places in victory at Pride Park, due to Plymouth Argyle's surprise 2-0 defeat at home to Port Vale on Friday evening.

The decision to replace Liam Rosenior with Warne in the dugout came from the desire to win promotion back to the Championship this season, and despite the top two race being a way off at present, the Rams look in good shape to cement a top six berth in the coming months.

However, the pressure is on until they achieve that, and losing to the Owls could see the gap between them and the top six increase significantly.
