Derby County boss Paul Warne has admitted Max Bird's injury was the major negative from their FA Cup defeat to West Ham, with the midfielder facing up to two months out.

The Rams were beaten by the Premier League side at Pride Park and whilst the Hammers fully merited the victory, Derby were competitive for large parts.

Even though they could take a lot from the performance, they did lose Bird through injury, with the 22-year-old replaced just after the hour mark.

And, speaking to reporter Henry Winter after the game, Warne gave an update on the key man, who could be set for a spell on the sidelines.

"I’d rather have lost 8-0 than lose Max Bird. He felt his groin when he shot, then felt it again. He’s been a gladiator for me. It's a massive blow. I worry it could be anything from two to eight weeks."

The Rams are back in action this weekend against Morecambe as they look to maintain their excellent form in the third tier which has seem them jump up to fourth in the table.

The verdict

This is a massive blow for Derby as Bird is a quality player at League One level and has been a standout performer in their excellent run of form under Warne.

The comments from the boss about preferring to lose 8-0 shows just how much of a setback this is for Derby and all connected to the club will be hopeful that he is just out for a few weeks.

But, there is enough in the Rams squad to cope and this injury will open up an opportunity for someone else to come in and make their mark on the team.
