Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert has revealed that the club have no intention of selling Luke Woolfenden for a fee below what they believe he is worth.

The 21-year-old, who is a product of the Tractor Boys' youth academy, has been subject of reported interest from Sheffield United this month.

According to The Sun, the Blades are thought to be weighing up a £3m bid for Woolfenden as manager Chris Wilder looks to bolster his defensive options during the transfer window.

A mainstay in Ipswich's starting eleven this season, the defender has illustrated some real signs of promise for his side in League One.

Woolfenden helped the Tractor Boys secure a 0-0 draw on their travels last night against fellow promotion rivals Oxford United.

Although Ipswich missed out on the chance to move into the top-two at the Kassam Stadium, they did close the gap between them and league leaders Rotherham United to two points.

Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times after the game about the Blades' supposed £3m valuation of Woolfenden, Lambert said: "You can put another three in front of that and then I might think.

"Three million?!

"Three million doesn't even buy you a flake!

"There's absolutely no chance whatsoever that would ever happen.

"The big lad is playing fantastically well, everybody knows it.

"Three million?

"No way."

Woolfenden will be aiming to play an integral role for Ipswich this weekend in their clash with Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park.

The Verdict

When you consider just how impressive Woolfenden has been this season for Ipswich, it is hardly a shock that Lambert is keen to keep him at Portman Road.

With the defender in their side, there is no reason why the Tractor Boys cannot secure an immediate return to the Championship in May following last season's relegation.

However, if a club do indeed opt to submit a sizeable bid for Woolfenden, it will be intriguing to see whether Ipswich are able to resist the temptation to cash in.
