Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert has reiterated that he's hoping to strengthen his squad in the transfer market this month, but has admitted that it could be difficult due to the financial situation at the club.

Tractor Boys have made a promising start to the season in League One and are currently fifth in the table going into their clash with Accrington Stanley at Portman Road tomorrow.

However, despite their promising start to the campaign, Lambert would ideally like to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window, to give the team the best possible chance of securing a return to the Championship.

Lambert has previously stated that he's hoping to sign some players this month, but given the club's limited finances, that could prove easier said than done.

The Ipswich boss revealed at his press conference this morning that the club are working on signing some new players this month, but admitted that the club will probably need to sell some players first to free up some funds.

Lambert told the East Anglian Daily Times: "We don't have the finances to go out and do major, major things. For anything of significance, yeah, we'd have to sell.

"If money came in, dear oh dear, you would go really heavy and go for lads who you think can do it. But in this moment that isn't there and that's totally fine. We'll try and do little things but we can't do half a million or anything like that.

"There are some young ones there you could sell for a hell of a lot of money but somebody has to want them."

The Verdict

Ideally, Lambert would like to be in a position where he could sign players freely, but given the financial situation at the club, he's restricted in terms of what he can do.

It seems as though he'll need to sell players before he can make any new signings. Either that, or he'll have to make loan signings or target players from the lower divisions, which you could say would be a bit of a risk.

Ideally, he would want to sign experienced players, that he knows will be able to help the club win promotion. However, it seems as though that isn't possible at the moment.

Selling one of the club's promising young players like Luke Woolfenden and Flynn Downes would obviously change the situation significantly, so it'll be very interesting to see if that happens.
