Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert has revealed that he has identified the players he wants to bring in during the January window, report the club's official Twitter account

He says the ambition is to bring them in early in order to give them as good a chance as possible of surviving the drop.

"We have identified players to go & try to get. We’ll be in a different place if we get them," Lamber told his pre-match press conference.

"We have to try to make signings early.

"If we don’t get them in early you could be a further four or five games down. I think the players that’ll come in will know the league."

Previous manager Paul Hurst brought in 12 new faces during the summer in a bid to revitalise Mick McCarthy's ageing squad, but the former Shrewsbury Town boss was sacked after winning just one of his first 15 matches.

Ipswich will be desperate for a win when they face Stoke City on Saturday to kick-start their survival push having won just once all season and with Lambert yet to taste success with his new club.

They currently sit rock bottom of the Championship on 11 points and a full seven behind Bolton Wanderers who sit just one place above them.

The verdict

This all sounds perfectly reasonable.

Whether those plans will actually come to fruition or not is another matter. Ipswich are hardly an attractive team to join at the moment.

They may well be completely cut adrift before January.
