Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert has insisted that his side's defeat to Coventry City in the second round of the FA Cup was the worst performance he had seen since taking over at Portman Road last year.

The Tractor Boys' dismal relationship with the world's oldest cup competition continued yesterday as they were eliminated by the Sky Blues in a replay of their original clash which took place earlier this month.

Ipswich have now won just one FA Cup tie since 2010 and will have to wait until next year to launch another run.

Despite making a relatively positive start to their showdown with Coventry, the Tractor Boys fell behind in the 18th minute as Jordan Shipley netted his fourth goal of the season.

Maxime Biamou then doubled his side's advantage as he fired past goalkeeper Tomas Holy.

Luke Garbutt gave Ipswich a lifeline in the 84th minute of the game as he headed home from close range.

However, although the Tractor Boys pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, they were unable to break down a resilient Coventry defence.

Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times after the game, Lambert said "Not good enough, without a doubt.

"That's the worst performance we've turned in during my year here.

"We never deserved to go through.

"All credit Coventry, they were better than us, but it's the worst performance in my time here.

"Listen we were poor.

"We never turned up, we never got going and never did the basics of the game.

"You cannot mask the fact that we didn't deserve to go through."

The Verdict

When you consider just how poor Ipswich were last night, it would be a major surprise if Lambert doesn't respond to this performance by making a number of alterations to his starting eleven for their upcoming clash with Bristol Rovers at Portman Road.

Given that the Tractor Boys have failed to win their last three League One games, they may need to secure a positive result against the Pirates in order to keep their promotion hopes on track.

By producing an eye-catching display in-front of their supporters on Saturday, Ipswich could gain some much-needed momentum heading into the second-half of the season.
