Paul Hurst has today confirmed that defender Luke Chambers will be the captain of Ipswich Town for the upcoming season.

The 32-year-old was the club captain for most of Mick McCarthy's tenure at the club after Carlos Edwards departed in 2014.

There was some debate about whether he should carry on in the role under Hurst, but the manager has today confirmed he will.

Luke’s captain, whenever he’s in the team, though obviously if he’s not he will still be a big voice around the place,” the manager told the East Anglian Daily Times.

He also went on to say that Chambers is one of the few players who is guaranteed a starting spot for the Tractor Boys' opening day clash with Blackburn Rovers.

Hurst has made four signings this summer as he looks to lead Ipswich further up the table.

So far Gwion Edwards, Ellis Harrison, Jordan Roberts and Trevoh Chalobah have arrived at Portman Road ahead of a new era for the club.

The Verdict

When Mick McCarthy left Portman Road it was hardly the friendliest of departures with many of the fans turning on their long-term manager.

But I believe that it is important to keep some semblance of stability at the club and leaving Chambers as captain is a good show of that.

He did not let himself down at all last season so there is no reason at all why he should not continue as club captain.
