Paul Heckingbottom makes Sheffield United transfer admission amid Oliver Burke rumours

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom has hinted there could be exits from the side this January.

Blackburn Rovers have been linked with a move for Oliver Burke in recent days, and this admission from Heckingbottom just adds fuel to that fire.

A deadline day deal for the player failed to materialise last Summer. When a move for Bordeaux striker Josh Maja fell through, Blackburn moved for the Sheffield United player but left it too late.

“It’s not happened but it means we’re going to have those situations further down the line this season, so we can’t leave ourselves short,” said Heckingbottom, via the Sheffield Star

“We need to make sure that the players still know and understand that there’s going to be a chance for them to step up and perform. And if they do that, they’ll stay in the team.

“We’re going to need everyone. There may still be players that leave because we do have a lot in attacking positions. We want our players to get minutes as much as they want to get minutes. But we won’t leave ourselves short.

“It’ll be about making sure we have a good enough squad to keep winning games and keep competing against the top teams in this division.”

Quiz: Can you name which club Sheffield United signed these 20 strikers from?

Rhian Brewster?

Burke has only featured for 170 minutes in the Championship this season, starting two games and coming off the bench once. The 24-year old has not scored this campaign from his limited game time.

Sheffield United are 13th in the Championship table and have won their last four league games. The Blades are eight points away from the play-off places, but have four games in hand.

United have had multiple games postponed due to Covid-19 outbreaks across the division. Heckingbottom’s side won their most recent game 1-0, away at Fulham, on December 20.

Their next game comes against Wolves in the Third Round of the FA Cup on January 9.

Blackburn Rovers are second in the Championship, one point clear of third place Fulham but having played two games more.

Tony Mowbray’s side next play against Wigan in the FA Cup on January 8.

The Verdict

Burke hasn’t featured much for Sheffield United this season so a change of scenery may be needed for the striker to kick-start his career.

Rovers are clearly interested in him considering the failed move for him last Summer. If United can command a fee for the player then now may be the right time to sell.

Blackburn’s promotion push will be strengthened with the addition of another rotation option. This signing also by no means suggests any bad news for Ben Brereton-Diaz’s future with the club.
